[Verse 1] We put him in the stone beside the road Nobody tells you where the sleeping go I kept my palm against the cold-cut name Till the small lamp gave out and the wind came And further down they tore their hair and cried For a man with no morning on the other side [Pre-Chorus] Then a hand in Corinth bent above a page One reed, one flame, one word they had to send And they read it in the upper room that night And the floor of all my grief gave way to light [Chorus] The cloud comes open over the water A shout, a voice, a trumpet in the deep The stones go white where our own are sleeping They come up first - they were never ours to keep We are children of the day [Verse 2] The slabs stand open in a field of white They come up whole, they come up in the light Nobody ruined, nobody undone Only the sleepers sitting up at the sound And he turns, and the scar above his eye is the one [Chorus] The cloud comes open over the water The gate swings wide and the road runs bare We are not taken - we are going out to meet Him Past the last stone and up into the air We are children of the day [Bridge] No one is given the hour, no one is given the day It comes like a thief on the stair - no lock, no sound, no warning They were laying out the tables, they were saying we are safe When it turned on them the way the labour turns at morning And there was nowhere left to go [Verse 3] One lamp in one window on a street of shuttered black We were awake, we were dressed, we were not taken by surprise And the sun came over the hill and we were already walking east With the whole of the morning standing in our eyes The watch was kept, the fire was down to ash And the ones still sleeping slept behind their doors [Pre-Chorus] So buckle the plain bronze across your chest Call it faith, call it love - it is the same And set the helmet on, because it is the hope And no empire on earth gave us our name [Chorus] The cloud comes open over the water The stones go white and the road runs gold We were never appointed to the wrath that's coming Waking or sleeping, we are His to hold We are children of the day We are children of the day [Outro] So say it to each other in the morning Say it again, say it till it's true The stone is only stone now in the grass And I am holding on to you

About the passage

1 Thessalonians 4: Honour in ordinary life, hope in bereavement

Chapter 4 moves holiness out of abstraction and into bodies, relationships, work, grief, and expectation. Paul begins from conduct the Thessalonians have already received and asks them to “abound more and more,” then names sanctification in terms that include sexual integrity and the possibility of wronging another person. Brotherly love is likewise praised before it is asked to grow. Even ambition gets redirected toward a quiet life, one’s own affairs, and work with one’s hands, showing that expectation of Christ does not make ordinary responsibility beneath notice. The chapter then turns to the dead. Sorrow is not forbidden, but it is given a different ground through Jesus’ death and resurrection. Those alive at the Lord’s coming will not precede the dead. The dead in Christ rise first, then living and raised believers are gathered “together with them.” The passage reaches its goal in reunion and permanent presence with the Lord, not in supplying every later end-time timetable.

1 Thessalonians 5: Children of the day in a community of care

The final chapter shifts from what happens to the dead at Christ’s coming to how the community stands in relation to the day itself. The day remains sudden, like a thief in the night, but the Thessalonians are called children of light rather than owners of a secret date. Faith, love, and hope return as armour, linking the ending to the thanksgiving that opened the book. From there, Paul’s instructions become intensely communal. Labouring leaders are to be recognized, yet care does not belong to leaders alone: different needs receive different responses, patience extends to all, and retaliation is refused. Three tiny commands about joy, prayer, and thanksgiving carry the weight of a book that has already named affliction and bereavement. Spiritual speech receives the same balance: do not quench, do not despise, but test. The closing prayer then shifts confidence from the community’s performance to the faithfulness of the God who calls, before drawing everyone into prayer, greeting, hearing, and grace.
