My Grace Is Sufficient for Thee
2 Corinthians · austere chamber lament
[Reluctant Boast]
Visions and revelations are not where I stand,
A man caught to heaven heard words beyond man.
Whether in body or out, God alone knew,
Yet boasting was limited to weakness made true.
[Verse I]
Lest revelation exalt him above,
A thorn in the flesh stayed close as a blow.
Three times he pleaded that it might depart,
Three times the weakness returned to the heart.
[Chorus]
My grace is sufficient for thee,
My strength is made perfect in weakness.
Therefore most gladly the frailty is named,
That the power of Christ may rest in the same.
My grace is sufficient for thee,
Not absence of pain, but power within it.
[Verse II]
In infirmity, reproach, necessity, and distress,
When weak in himself, then strength could be confessed.
Signs of an apostle were patiently shown,
Yet Paul sought their hearts and not what they owned.
[Bridge]
Children should not store up wealth for the father,
The father spends self for the children he gathers.
He feared when he came he would find what he grieved,
Contention and uncleanness where warning was received.
[Final Chorus]
My grace is sufficient for thee,
My strength is made perfect in weakness.
No vision can crown what the cross has made low,
The power of Christ rests where boasting lets go.
[Coda]
The thorn was not named,
But the answer was clear.
