[Litany] Come to Bethel, bring another show, Blight found the garden, the locust found grain, Publish the offering so the neighbors know. Plague crossed the road, still the heart stayed the same. Hunger came clean, but you did not return, Blight found the garden, the locust found grain, Rain crossed one field while another one burned. Plague crossed the road, still the heart stayed the same. [Verse 2] Yet have ye not returned, the refrain would fall, After drought, after smoke, after mercy through all. Prepare to meet thy God, O Israel, Not an idol confined to a shrine on a hill. [Refrain] Blight found the garden, the locust found grain, Plague crossed the road, still the heart stayed the same. [Bridge] He forms the mountain and summons the wind, Knows what is spoken and what lies within. The warning grows quiet when refusal is done: Prepare for the Maker of darkness and dawn. [Final Chorus] Blight found the garden, the locust found grain, Plague crossed the road, still the heart stayed the same. Prepare for the Maker of darkness and dawn.

About the passage

Amos 4: Five warnings, and still no return

Amos begins with Samaria’s cultivated comfort and immediately names the poor people crushed beneath it. He then turns to Bethel and Gilgal with an invitation so sharp it becomes accusation: come, worship, and multiply transgression. Sacrifices, tithes, thanksgiving, and free offerings are plentiful, but the people’s enjoyment of the activity cannot make it acceptable. The center of the chapter is a fivefold record of famine, drought, crop destruction, pestilence, war, and overthrow. Each movement ends with the same line, “yet have ye not returned unto me.” The disasters change, the response does not. That repetition gives the final command its force. “Prepare to meet thy God” is not another festival announcement. It follows warnings already resisted and is backed by a description of the One who forms mountains, creates wind, changes light, and treads the earth’s heights.
