[Warning] Let no persuasive speech carry the heart, For treasures of wisdom in Christ are not part. Rooted and built, established in faith, Abounding with thanks where the gospel was placed. [Verse I] Beware empty philosophy shaped by the world, Tradition of men where the elements rule. In Christ all the fullness of Godhead resides, And ye are complete under Him who is Head. [Chorus] Buried and risen with Him, Through faith in the working of God. Dead in transgression, made living together, Forgiven and raised by the power of the Son. Buried and risen with Him, The old record no longer can stand. [Victory] The handwriting against us was taken away, Nailed to the cross where its charges were stayed. Principalities spoiled and openly shown, The triumph belongs to the crucified Lord. [Verse II] Let no one judge you in meat, drink, or days, The shadows once pointed, but Christ is the substance. Let no false humility steal the reward, Intruding in visions while severed from Head. [Bridge] Why live under rules as though still of the world, Touch not and taste not as holiness earned? Self-made religion may punish the flesh, Yet cannot restrain what the heart still desires. [Final Chorus] Buried and risen with Him, Complete in the Head over power and throne. The cross canceled debt and exposed every ruler, And faith holds the life God has raised with His Son. [Outro] The shadows had a purpose, But the substance is Christ.

About the passage

Colossians 2: Fullness in Christ leaves no room for a spiritual surcharge

Colossians 2 tests every spiritual addition against the fullness already located in Christ. Paul’s concern for believers he has not met is that they be knit together in love and established in what they have received, because “all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” are in Christ. The warning against being taken captive is therefore specific: empty deception, human tradition, and worldly rudiments are dangerous when they move dependence away from him. The chapter answers such claims with embodied language. The fullness of the Godhead dwells bodily in Christ, believers are complete in him, and their burial and rising with him are tied to God’s working. The hostile record is erased and the powers are disarmed at the cross. Food rules, calendars, angelic claims, and severe bodily practices may carry an appearance of wisdom, but Colossians asks whether they hold fast to the head from whom the whole body receives nourishment and growth.
