Justice in the Gates

Deuteronomy 17:1-26:19

[Verse 1] Witnesses established guilt, and difficult cases climbed, Priest and judge at the chosen place gave sentence by the law. A future king would copy every word and read it all his days, No horses, wives, or silver were to lift his heart above his brothers. [Pre-Chorus] Levites had the LORD as portion, And false diviners had no place. [Chorus] Justice in the gates, honest weights within the hand, Truthful witnesses and refuge for the bloodless man. Protect the poor, the stranger, worker, widow, and the field, Let covenant be visible in every judgment sealed. [Verse 2] A prophet like to Moses would speak only what God gave, Presumption would be tested when the spoken word did not occur. War had laws for fear and peace, fruit trees stood beyond the siege, Even unresolved bloodshed called the elders to responsibility. [Bridge] Roofs required a parapet, lost goods must be returned, Wages paid before the sunset, gleanings left for those in need. Punishment had measured limits, oxen ate while treading grain, And firstfruits told the story from oppression to the land. [Final Chorus] Justice in the gates, honest weights within the hand, Truthful witnesses and refuge for the bloodless man. Protect the poor, the stranger, worker, widow, and the field, Let covenant be visible in every judgment sealed. [Outro] The law entered the marketplace, And worship entered justice.
