No Power to Enjoy It
Ecclesiastes · Bible Songs, Classical & Orchestral, Pop & Contemporary
I have seen an evil heavy upon people:
God may give a person riches, honor, wealth,
Nothing outward missing from desire,
Yet no power to enjoy what has been given.
A person may have children by the hundred
And live through years beyond a common span,
But if the soul is never filled with goodness,
A stillborn child has entered greater quiet.
All our labor feeds the mouth,
Yet appetite is never finally filled.
What advantage has the wise above the foolish?
Better what the eyes can see and receive
Than desire roaming endlessly through air.
Whatever now exists was named before us;
Many words can only multiply the emptiness.
Who can say what is good for passing days,
For a life that moves like shadow?
