I have seen an evil heavy upon people: God may give a person riches, honor, wealth, Nothing outward missing from desire, Yet no power to enjoy what has been given. A person may have children by the hundred And live through years beyond a common span, But if the soul is never filled with goodness, A stillborn child has entered greater quiet. All our labor feeds the mouth, Yet appetite is never finally filled. What advantage has the wise above the foolish? Better what the eyes can see and receive Than desire roaming endlessly through air. Whatever now exists was named before us; Many words can only multiply the emptiness. Who can say what is good for passing days, For a life that moves like shadow?

About the passage

Ecclesiastes 6: A long life without the power to enjoy it

The difference between having much and enjoying any of it becomes impossible to miss. Ecclesiastes imagines riches, honor, many children, and an extraordinarily long life, then removes one capacity: the power to experience the abundance as good. The result is not counted as success merely because the totals are impressive. Appetite supplies a smaller version of the same problem. Labor feeds the mouth, but desire keeps moving, so recurring satisfaction never becomes final completion. The chapter also places human argument inside a larger order already established. Multiplying words cannot make a person stronger than the one who is stronger, nor can speech open the future to inspection. The closing questions leave the present good and the coming future uncertain, preparing for wisdom that helps without pretending to control everything.
