[Blessing] Blessed be God who has blessed us in Christ With heavenly blessing beyond earthly price. Chosen before the foundation was laid, Holy in love by the purpose He made. [Verse I] Predestined to adoption through Jesus the Son, Accepted in favor through the Beloved One. Redemption through blood and forgiveness of wrong, Rich grace made abundant in wisdom's own song. [Chorus] Chosen before the foundation, Gathered in Christ in the fullness of time. Heaven and earth under one reconciliation, An inheritance sealed by the Spirit divine. Chosen before the foundation, To the praise of the glory of grace. [Verse II] The word of truth heard, the gospel believed, The promised Holy Spirit as earnest received. A pledge of redemption until the full claim, A people possessed to the praise of His name. [Prayer Bridge] Give wisdom and revelation to eyes of the heart, That hope and inheritance become clearly marked. The power that raised Christ and seated Him high Works toward believers beneath the same sky. [Final Chorus] Chosen before the foundation, Christ far above every power and name. All things beneath Him, Head over the church, His body, the fullness that fills every place. [Coda] The chapter began with blessing, And ended under Christ's headship.

About the passage

Ephesians 1: The blessing keeps returning to Christ

The Book of Ephesians opens in a rush of blessing that keeps returning to the same center: Christ. Paul moves from God's purpose before the world's foundation to adoption, redemption, forgiveness, inheritance, and the Spirit's seal without treating any of them as disconnected favors. The scale grows from the recipients' own salvation to God's purpose to gather all things in Christ, in heaven and on earth. Then the chapter turns from praise to prayer. Paul does not ask that they receive a different spiritual status, but that "the eyes of your understanding" be enlightened to the hope, riches, and power already at work. That power is not left undefined. Its measure is Christ raised from the dead, exalted above every authority, and given as head over all things to the church.
