[Verse 1] Princes report that people, priests, and Levites have not remained separated. Rulers and leaders are described as chief offenders. He pulls hair from head and beard and sits astonished. At the evening sacrifice Ezra rises from grief and falls on his knees. [Pre-Chorus] No answer came to quiet every fear, Only the weight of all that had drawn near. Ezra admits that the restored people have again forsaken clear commandments. He confesses that punishment has been less than their sins deserve. Ezra weeps and casts himself down before the temple as a great congregation gathers. [Bridge] A covenant is proposed to put away foreign wives according to counsel and law. Ezra is urged to arise because the matter belongs to his leadership. Priests, Levites, and Israel swear to carry out the word. Ezra withdraws fasting and mourning over the transgression.
