[Verse 1]
A virgin shall conceive a son,
Immanuel shall bear the sign.
People walking deep in darkness
See a great and dawning shine.
Unto us a child is given,
Government upon His shoulder:
Wonderful, the mighty God,
Prince of Peace forever older.
[Refrain]
A shoot shall rise from Jesse's root,
The Spirit rest upon the One
Who judges not by outward seeing,
But with righteousness begun.
Wolf and lamb shall dwell together,
Earth be filled as seas are filled;
A banner for the gathered nations,
Every hostile mountain stilled.
[Verse 2]
Yet His visage would be marred,
Despised, rejected, acquainted with grief.
No beauty drew the proud toward Him,
No earthly splendor promised relief.
Surely He carried human sorrow,
Bore the grief that sinners earned;
Stricken in the place of rebels,
While every wandering foot had turned.
[Chorus]
Wounded for our transgressions,
Bruised for our iniquity,
The chastisement that brought us peace
Was laid where guilt could not be free.
Like a lamb before the shearers,
He opened not His mouth to flee.
Wounded for our transgressions,
By His stripes comes healing's plea.
[Final Verse]
Cut from the land, yet grave with the wealthy;
No violence lived in His hand or tongue.
He shall see seed and prolong His days;
The righteous servant's work is won.
He bore the sin of many
And made intercession strong.
The promised King and suffering servant
Carries mercy all along.
