About the passage
Jeremiah 18: The vessel can still be made otherwise
Jeremiah 18 begins with wet clay and ends with words hardened by conflict. At the potter's house, Jeremiah watches a spoiled vessel remade while the clay remains in the craftsman's hands. God immediately explains the image through conditional prophetic speech: a nation threatened with destruction may turn, and a nation promised good may abandon obedience. The warning is meant to engage response, not merely report a fixed future. Judah answers that possibility by choosing its own devices, an answer made stranger by images of abandoning dependable waters and ancient paths. The conflict then becomes personal. Jeremiah's opponents are confident that priests, wise men, and prophets can continue without him, so they plot to silence the unwelcome voice. Jeremiah remembers that he had once stood before God for their good. His final prayer reverses that posture and asks for the announced judgment to fall on them. The chapter records that severity without turning it into a general command.
