Lyrics · Jeremiah
The Word Returned
Jeremiah 36:1-32
[Verse 1]
Baruch bent over the roll while the prophet spoke,
Years entered ink in the scratch of a reed.
The fast-day crowd heard, then princes grew pale,
[Silence]
Cut it in pieces; cast it into flame,
[Verse 2]
A winter-room fire waited beside the king.
Three columns, four columns, the knife made a line,
No garment was torn and no heart changed its mind.
Hide the scribe, hide the prophet, the order went out,
[Chorus]
Cut it in pieces; cast it into flame,
But burning the page does not silence the Name.
Yet the word found shelter beyond royal reach.
Another roll opened, the sentences returned,
[Bridge]
And more words were added than the king had burned.
Ash left the hearth, but the warning stood tall,
The hand can destroy paper; it cannot unwrite God.
[Final Chorus]
Cut it in pieces; cast it into flame,
But burning the page does not silence the Name.
Ash left the hearth, but the warning stood tall,
The hand can destroy paper; it cannot unwrite God.
