The City Fell as the Word Had Said

Jeremiah 39:1-18; 40:1-43:13; 52:1-34

[Movement I] The breach opened wide in the eleventh year, The king ran by night, but the plain held him near. The last sight he carried was sons falling down, The city fell as the word had said, [Movement II] Then darkness and chains replaced Judah’s crown. A prophet stood grieving, not pleased to be right, Released by the army that conquered the night. Walls into rubble and houses into red. [Movement III] One fragile governor gathered the poor, One meal and one dagger broke peace once more. The remnant asked counsel and promised to hear, Then called truth a lie when obedience meant staying. [Bridge] They dragged the old prophet down Egypt’s road, And stones beneath clay marked another king’s throne. [Coda] The city fell as the word had said, Walls into rubble and houses into red. They dragged the old prophet down Egypt’s road, And stones beneath clay marked another king’s throne.
