[Opening Refrain]
Days are coming,
After ruin, after sword,
When a new covenant is planted
By the faithful living Lord.
Not like the promise fathers broke
Though led from Egypt's sea;
A deeper writing waits within,
A law where hearts can read.
[Verse 1]
No tablet only held outside,
No borrowed word alone,
The law shall enter mind and heart
And make its dwelling known.
From least to greatest, all shall know
The One who calls and saves;
Iniquity shall be forgiven,
Sin no more remembered as chains.
[Chorus]
A new covenant,
Written not in fading ink,
But in the inward chambers
Where desire and conscience think.
A new covenant,
Mercy deeper than the scar;
The God who numbers heaven's host
Will gather near and far.
[Verse 2]
As surely as the sun gives day,
As moon and stars give night,
Israel shall not cease before Him
While those ordinances light.
Measure heaven, search earth's foundations:
Still the promise will remain.
Fields once cast with dead men's bodies
Shall be holy ground again.
[Coda]
After weeping, after exile,
After every broken part,
Days are coming:
A new covenant,
A law upon the heart.
