[Processional Chant] Like chariots leaping on the ridges of stone, Each keeps the pathway, no soldier moves alone. Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, sound the alarm, [Verse 1] Let every heart tremble on the holy mountain. Darkness at noon and a dawn made of ranks, Fire in front and a wilderness behind. Wall after wall cannot slow what has come, [Chorus] Like chariots leaping on the ridges of stone, Each keeps the pathway, no soldier moves alone. Windows receive it like thieves in the gloom. Earth underfoot and the heavens above shake, [Silence] Sun folds its light and the stars turn away. [Verse 2] The LORD gives his voice before the great host, The day is not rumor, the warning is close. Who can endure when the trumpet is blown? [Final Chorus] Like chariots leaping on the ridges of stone, Each keeps the pathway, no soldier moves alone. Return before judgment has claimed what it owns.

About the passage

Joel 2: The day of alarm becomes a promise of presence

Joel 2 begins with a trumpet of alarm and an advancing force whose discipline makes ordinary defenses useless. The land before it resembles Eden, while the land behind it becomes wilderness, and the LORD is finally named as the one whose voice goes before the army. Yet the chapter turns on "also now." Return is still possible, and a second trumpet summons the whole community to fasting, mourning, and appeal to God's mercy. The answer reverses the earlier devastation point by point: corn, wine, oil, rain, pasture, fruit, and full vats return, while the devouring force is driven away. The promise then deepens from provision to presence, declaring that the LORD is in Israel's midst. Afterward the horizon expands beyond harvest restoration. The Spirit is poured upon sons and daughters, old and young, servants and handmaids, and amid cosmic signs deliverance is promised to those who call upon the LORD's name.
