[Call] Not only the throne, not only the priest, Sons and daughters carry the word, Upon the servants, women and men, [Response] Not only the strong with a name in the street. Old men dream and the young behold visions. The Spirit is poured beyond rank and possession. [Verse 1] I will pour out my Spirit, let every barrier fall, But the gift is the LORD’s and the LORD gives the call. Blood, fire, smoke, and the darkened sun, [Call] The moon bears warning before the day comes. Whoever calls on the name of the LORD, [Response] In Zion finds refuge according to his word. Gift and warning, vision and plea, [Final Chorus] Upon the servants, women and men, The Spirit is poured beyond rank and possession. The remnant is called and delivered by mercy.

About the passage

Joel 2: The day of alarm becomes a promise of presence

Joel 2 begins with a trumpet of alarm and an advancing force whose discipline makes ordinary defenses useless. The land before it resembles Eden, while the land behind it becomes wilderness, and the LORD is finally named as the one whose voice goes before the army. Yet the chapter turns on "also now." Return is still possible, and a second trumpet summons the whole community to fasting, mourning, and appeal to God's mercy. The answer reverses the earlier devastation point by point: corn, wine, oil, rain, pasture, fruit, and full vats return, while the devouring force is driven away. The promise then deepens from provision to presence, declaring that the LORD is in Israel's midst. Afterward the horizon expands beyond harvest restoration. The Spirit is poured upon sons and daughters, old and young, servants and handmaids, and amid cosmic signs deliverance is promised to those who call upon the LORD's name.
