[Movement I] The mountain is holy because the LORD is there, No conqueror crosses as owner again. Wine on the mountain and milk on the hill, A fountain shall come from the house of the LORD, [Movement II] Rivers wake Judah and run through the vale. Life does not cancel the blood that was shed, Justice remembers what empires forget. Watering dry ground beyond the temple wall. [Movement III] Judah shall dwell and Jerusalem remain, Generation to generation under one name. The stream in the valley and the throne on the height, Mercy with holiness, abundance with right. [Bridge] Know that the LORD is the God in the midst, The book ends not with locust, but presence and spring. [Coda] A fountain shall come from the house of the LORD, Watering dry ground beyond the temple wall. Know that the LORD is the God in the midst, The book ends not with locust, but presence and spring.

About the passage

Joel 3: The nations gather before the judge

The final chapter moves from Judah's restored life to the judgment of nations that scattered the people, divided the land, plundered what belonged to the LORD, and sold human lives for passing pleasure. The accusations are concrete, especially where a boy is exchanged for a prostitute and a girl for wine. The nations are then summoned to prepare for war so thoroughly that agricultural tools become weapons, but their muster leads not to an uncertain contest. It brings them into the valley where the LORD sits to judge. Harvest and winepress imagery now describe wickedness brought to ripeness. Cosmic darkness returns as the LORD roars from Zion, shaking heaven and earth while becoming refuge and strength for his people. The book closes by reversing its opening drought: rivers flow, a fountain comes from the house of the LORD, Judah endures, and the final assurance is that the LORD dwells in Zion.
