[Nocturne Verse]
Nicodemus came by night,
A ruler trained in law.
He knew the signs could not be done
Unless God stood withal.
Yet knowledge at the doorway
Could not make the kingdom plain;
A man must meet a birth from heaven,
Must be born again.
[Refrain]
Born of water, born of Spirit,
Wind moves where no eye can reign.
Hear the sound but trace no pathway;
So are those born again.
Flesh gives birth to flesh below,
Spirit opens heaven's domain.
Do not marvel at the saying:
Ye must be born again.
[Verse 2]
The teacher asked how age could enter
Once more through a mother's frame.
The answer reached from earthly symbols
Toward the serpent Moses raised.
As that sign stood in the desert,
So the Son of Man must rise,
That believing may receive life
Not confined by mortal skies.
[Chorus]
God so loved the world,
He gave His only begotten Son,
Not to condemn the world,
But that salvation might be won.
Light has entered darkness;
Some flee because deeds remain.
Truth comes gladly to the light,
Made manifest and born again.
[Final Refrain]
Night held the conversation,
But dawn lived in the claim:
The kingdom is not inherited;
The heart must be born again.
