John
[Nocturne Verse] Nicodemus came by night, A ruler trained in law. He knew the signs could not be done Unless God stood withal. Yet knowledge at the doorway Could not make the kingdom plain; A man must meet a birth from heaven, Must be born again. [Refrain] Born of water, born of Spirit, Wind moves where no eye can reign. Hear the sound but trace no pathway; So are those born again. Flesh gives birth to flesh below, Spirit opens heaven's domain. Do not marvel at the saying: Ye must be born again. [Verse 2] The teacher asked how age could enter Once more through a mother's frame. The answer reached from earthly symbols Toward the serpent Moses raised. As that sign stood in the desert, So the Son of Man must rise, That believing may receive life Not confined by mortal skies. [Chorus] God so loved the world, He gave His only begotten Son, Not to condemn the world, But that salvation might be won. Light has entered darkness; Some flee because deeds remain. Truth comes gladly to the light, Made manifest and born again. [Final Refrain] Night held the conversation, But dawn lived in the claim: The kingdom is not inherited; The heart must be born again.

About the passage

John 3: Birth from above and the witness who steps aside

Nicodemus enters with status, learning, and a conclusion based on signs, but Jesus speaks of a birth no pedigree can produce. The conversation moves from flesh and Spirit to heavenly testimony, then to the lifted Son of man and the life received through belief. God’s love is directed toward the world, while the coming of light also exposes what people prefer to keep hidden. The second half of the chapter turns to John the Baptist, whose disciples worry about Jesus drawing the larger following. John refuses the rivalry. His joy is fulfilled when attention moves toward the one he was sent to announce: “He must increase, but I must decrease.” The Book of John closes the chapter by making origin decisive. The Son comes from above, carries the Father’s testimony, and holds everlasting life in relation to himself.
