[Refrain] God so loved the world, He gave His only Son, That whosoever believeth should not be undone; Not sent to condemn, but that the world be saved, Everlasting life for all who trust the One He gave. [Verse 1] As Moses raised the serpent in the wilderness, So must the Son of man be lifted in our sight; Whoever looks believing shall not perish there, But cross from death's dominion into endless life. [Verse 2] The one who trusts in Him is not condemned at all; The one who will not trust is judged already now, For unbelief has turned from God's begotten Son, And chosen hidden darkness when the Light came down. [Bridge] The evil deed retreats, afraid to be reproved; The one who doeth truth steps openly toward light; Let every work be manifest for what it is, And let it show the work was wrought in God aright. [Refrain] God so loved the world, He gave His only Son, That whosoever believeth should not be undone; Not sent to condemn, but that the world be saved, Everlasting life for all who trust the One He gave. [Outro] Come to the Light, and let the truth be seen.

About the passage

John 3: Birth from above and the witness who steps aside

Nicodemus enters with status, learning, and a conclusion based on signs, but Jesus speaks of a birth no pedigree can produce. The conversation moves from flesh and Spirit to heavenly testimony, then to the lifted Son of man and the life received through belief. God’s love is directed toward the world, while the coming of light also exposes what people prefer to keep hidden. The second half of the chapter turns to John the Baptist, whose disciples worry about Jesus drawing the larger following. John refuses the rivalry. His joy is fulfilled when attention moves toward the one he was sent to announce: “He must increase, but I must decrease.” The Book of John closes the chapter by making origin decisive. The Son comes from above, carries the Father’s testimony, and holds everlasting life in relation to himself.
