[Verse 1]
Noon stood hot on Jacob's well;
A Samaritan woman came.
A Jewish traveler asked for water,
Crossing custom, fear, and shame.
She wondered at the conversation;
He spoke of gift beyond the ground:
Living water, inward spring,
A life where thirst is drowned.
[Refrain]
Living water,
Not from rope or earthen jar.
Living water,
Rising where the wounded are.
Drink, and thirst no more for meaning;
Let the hidden heart be known.
Living water,
Springing up to life alone.
[Verse 2]
Five husbands lay within her story;
The man beside her was not one.
The truth was named without evasion,
Yet mercy did not turn and run.
She raised the mountain and the temple;
Worship moved beyond the place:
In spirit and in truth the Father
Seeks the hearts that meet His grace.
[Chorus]
She left the waterpot behind her,
Ran to tell the town she knew:
"Come see a man who told my history;
Could this be the Christ in view?"
They came beyond her former reputation,
Heard and stayed for two full days.
Many believed, no longer only
For the woman's first amazed phrase.
[Final Refrain]
Living water,
The Saviour of the world was known.
A village drank beyond the well,
And thirst became a song.
