Lyrics · Jonah
The Lot Fell upon Jonah
Jonah 1:7-10
[Call]
Cast the lot while the mast leans low,
The token moved past every weathered hand,
What is thy work? From what country and people?
[Response]
Ask which hidden cause has entered the boat.
Then stopped at Jonah where the questions began.
What road brought thy guilt beneath this mast?
[Verse 1]
I am a Hebrew; I fear the LORD,
The God of the heavens who made sea and land.
The lot fell upon Jonah, the confession fell harder:
[Call]
He feared the Sea-Maker while fleeing by water.
Why hast thou done this? the mariners cried,
[Response]
His doctrine was true while his footsteps had lied.
The storm made visible what language concealed,
[Final Chorus]
What is thy work? From what country and people?
What road brought thy guilt beneath this mast?
A named God is not the same as a life that will yield.
