The Sea Ceased from Her Raging

Jonah 1:11-16

[Processional Chant] Spare us, O LORD; lay no innocent blood, Thou hast done as it pleased thee upon the flood. Throw me into the sea, Jonah said, [Verse 1] The storm bears my answer and follows my flight. But sailors pulled oars till their shoulders gave way, Refusing too quickly to purchase calm with a life. They lifted the prophet, the black water opened, [Chorus] Spare us, O LORD; lay no innocent blood, Thou hast done as it pleased thee upon the flood. The body fell downward, the wind lost its voice. The sea ceased from her raging, silence struck harder, [Silence] Men who had feared death now feared the LORD. [Verse 2] A sacrifice rose from the deck they had emptied, Vows crossed the calm where the wild waves had roared. One man went under, but mercy reached sailors, [Final Chorus] Spare us, O LORD; lay no innocent blood, Thou hast done as it pleased thee upon the flood. The sea became still and their worship began.
