The Vow at Mizpeh

Judges 10:1-12:7

[Verse 1] Tola passed and Jair followed, thirty towns beneath his sons, Then Israel bowed to every god that ringed the land around them. Ammon crossed the river crushing tribes on either side, At last they cast the idols down, and God was grieved by Israel's pain. [Pre-Chorus] The rejected son came home to lead, But reckless words outran the need. [Chorus] A vow at Mizpeh cannot be unsaid, Victory came, but sorrow met him at the door. Guard every word before the battle, For triumph cannot heal a promise spoken wrong. [Verse 2] Jephthah had been driven out, yet elders sought his warrior hand, He stood before the LORD at Mizpeh and became the head of Gilead. He answered Ammon with the history of the roads Israel had walked, Three hundred years of settled land bore witness to his claim. [Bridge] The Spirit moved him into battle; twenty cities felt defeat, Then his daughter came with timbrels, his only child upon the street. She asked two months among the mountains, mourning what would never be, And Israel's daughters kept remembrance of the grief that followed victory. [Final Chorus] A vow at Mizpeh cannot be unsaid, Victory came, but sorrow met him at the door. Guard every word before the battle, For triumph cannot heal a promise spoken wrong. [Outro] At Shibboleth the river judged again, And Jephthah's six years closed.
