[Watchman] Remember, O LORD, what the remnant has borne, Strangers hold houses and the crown has been torn. Turn thou us unto thee, [Answer] Water has a price and the gate has no song, The worker bends low while the ruler does wrong. Renew our days as the days before. [Watchman] Joy left the circle and dancing wore black, Zion lies open where no pilgrims come back. Our fathers transgressed and we carry the weight, [Answer] We name our own sin at the desolate gate. Yet thy throne remains through generation and dust, So why should forgetting be stronger than trust? [Bridge] Turn thou us, unless we are wholly cast away; The book ends still waiting for the answer to stay. [Final Chorus] Turn thou us unto thee, Renew our days as the days before. Turn thou us, unless we are wholly cast away;

About the passage

Lamentations 5: The prayer that ends without a reply

Lamentations 5 gathers the book's losses into a communal prayer and makes ordinary necessities carry the weight. Inheritance, houses, water, wood, bread, rest, safety, honor, music, and worship have all been damaged or taken. The people describe dependence on foreign powers and the humiliation of paying for what once belonged to their own life and land. They speak of consequences inherited from earlier generations, yet they do not use that claim to deny present responsibility. Before the prayer ends, they confess, "woe unto us, that we have sinned." Violence reaches every rank and age, while elders disappear from the gate and young men from their music. The fallen human crown is then set beside the Lord's throne, which remains from generation to generation. That contrast gives the final appeal its ground and also sharpens its pain. The people ask to be turned back and renewed, but the closing line leaves rejection before God as an unresolved fear. No divine reply follows.
