Lyrics · Leviticus
Beyond the Veil
Leviticus 16:1-34
[Verse 1]
After strange fire took his sons, the veil could not be crossed at will,
Aaron washed and wore the linen, brought the bull and ram as given.
Two goats waited at the doorway while the sacred lots were cast,
One for blood within the holy, one to bear the sins away.
[Pre-Chorus]
Incense hid the mercy seat,
And no one else remained inside.
[Chorus]
Beyond the veil, with blood and trembling,
Once a year the high priest entered.
For himself, the house, the altar, and the people,
Atonement covered every place defiled.
[Verse 2]
Bull's blood fell before the mercy seat in seven measured drops,
Then the people's goat was offered and its blood went through the veil.
Horns of altar took the cleansing, every holy space was made clean,
Till the live goat stood beneath both hands and heard the nation's sin.
[Bridge]
Into an empty wilderness the bearer carried guilt,
Aaron changed his garments, washed, and offered what remained.
Bodies burned beyond the camp, escorts washed before return,
And the tenth day held affliction, rest, and pardon year by year.
[Final Chorus]
Beyond the veil, with blood and trembling,
Once a year the high priest entered.
For the sanctuary, altar, and the people,
Atonement covered every place defiled.
[Outro]
One goat died,
One carried sin away.
