[Intro]
My sons went in with fire of their own.
I go in with His.
[Verse 1]
Not on a day of my own choosing,
not in the gold and blue.
I wash in the water, I put on linen,
white, the way He told me to.
A bull for me and for my house,
two goats beside the tent.
I cast the lots between them.
I do not choose where each is sent.
[Pre-Chorus]
I take the coals from the altar
and two handfuls, beaten fine.
The curtain is heavy in my hand.
I lift it, and I cross the line.
[Chorus]
Beyond the veil, one day a year,
I walk in with the smoke and I walk in with fear.
A cloud on the mercy seat, so I live.
Seven times the blood, and the LORD forgives.
Beyond the veil, one day a year.
[Verse 2]
The cloud goes up and hides the gold.
I do not raise my eyes.
I dip my finger in the bullock's blood
and sprinkle it seven times.
Then out for the goat the lot gave God,
and back in with his blood,
for the tent, the altar and the holy place,
for all the camp has done.
[Chorus]
Beyond the veil, one day a year,
I walk in with the smoke and I walk in with fear.
A cloud on the mercy seat, so I live.
Seven times the blood, and the LORD forgives.
Beyond the veil, one day a year.
[Bridge]
Then I come out to the living goat
and lay both hands on his head,
and I say it all out loud to him
till there is nothing left unsaid.
A man is waiting with a rope.
He leads him far away,
out to a land where nobody lives,
and there he lets him stay.
[Verse 3]
I take the linen off again
and leave it where it lies.
I wash, I put the gold back on,
and come out under open skies.
The tenth day of the seventh month,
the whole camp bowed down low.
Nobody lifts a hand to work,
and every sin we carried has to go.
[Final Chorus]
Beyond the veil, one day a year,
I walk in with the smoke and I walk in with fear.
A cloud on the mercy seat, so I live.
Seven times the blood, and the LORD forgives.
Beyond the veil, one day a year.
My sons went in with fire of their own.
I go in with His.

About the passage
Leviticus 16: The sanctuary is cleansed, and the sins are carried away
Leviticus 16 answers the danger left hanging after the deaths of Aaron's sons by giving the high priest an appointed way into the innermost sanctuary. The day is not merely about an individual's guilt. Israel's uncleanness, transgressions, and sins affect the holy place, the tabernacle, and the altar that stand in the midst of the people. Blood is carried where the congregation cannot go, while incense covers the mercy seat and Aaron first addresses his own household before acting for others. Then the chapter turns from cleansing sacred space to visibly removing confessed iniquities through the living goat sent into the wilderness. Even the men who complete the outward parts of the rite must wash before reentering the camp. One priest performs the central work, but the entire community keeps the day through self-affliction and complete rest, and the annual command continues beyond Aaron to his successors.
