[Opening Refrain]
Rejoice with me:
The lost has been found.
Rejoice with me:
Let the house ring round.
One sheep, one coin, one wandering son;
Heaven makes joy when the lost come home.
[Verse 1]
A shepherd left ninety-nine in the wild
To seek one straying and carry it mild.
A woman lit candles and swept every floor
Till silver once missing was missing no more.
Friends were invited; the news crossed the room:
What had been absent returned from the gloom.
[Verse 2]
A younger son gathered the portion he claimed,
Spent it in distance till famine arrived.
He fed swine hungry for husks they consumed,
Remembered the servants at home who survived.
He rehearsed confession and turned toward the road;
His father saw far off and ran with the robe.
[Chorus]
The lost came home,
A ring on the hand,
Shoes on the feet,
Music through the land.
The dead lives again,
The wanderer is known;
Kill the fatted calf,
For the lost came home.
[Bridge]
The elder stood outside in anger,
Counting labor, debt, and feast.
The father pleaded: all was his,
But love must welcome the released.
[Final Refrain]
One sheep.
One coin.
One son restored.
Joy belongs to mercy
Before the open door.
