[Intro] The road went round Edom. The road went round. Something moved in the sand without a sound. [Verse 1] We went the long way round Edom, sun on our necks and sand in our bread. I said it first, or I said it loudest, we hate this food, we'd be better off dead. That night the sand began to move. They came in under the tent wall, bright, and the bite was fire, and the fire was fever, and my arm was burning by first light. [Pre-Chorus] We ran to Moses and said, we've sinned, we spoke against God and against you. Pray that He takes the serpents away. He prayed. And God said, make one too. [Chorus] Look and live. Look and live. Don't look at the bite, look at the pole. The poison is in you, it's already in, lift up your eyes and be whole. Look and live. Look and live. [Verse 2] He made a serpent out of bronze and he set it up high on a pole. My brother dragged me out on a blanket with my arm gone as black as coal. It looked like the thing that bit me. I didn't want to raise my head. It's that or nothing, my brother said, and I looked, and I lived instead. [Chorus] Look and live. Look and live. Don't look at the bite, look at the pole. The poison is in you, it's already in, lift up your eyes and be whole. Look and live. Look and live. [Bridge] Then the road went on to the well at Beer. The leaders dug with their staffs in the sand, and we sang to the water, come up, come up, and it came up cold into our hands. Sihon wouldn't let us pass. He fell at Jahaz. Og came out with his sons and his men. Don't be afraid of him, God said, and we didn't fear him then. [Final Chorus] Look and live. Look and live. Don't look at the bite, look at the pole. The poison is in you, it's already in, lift up your eyes and be whole. Look and live. Look and live. I still have the mark on my arm. Every morning I look up. [Outro] Look and live. Look and live.

About the passage

Numbers 21: Judgment, healing, and the first occupied kingdoms

Numbers 21 moves quickly between reversal, judgment, provision, song, and conquest. At Hormah, a place previously associated with Israel's disastrous unauthorized advance, the people appeal to the LORD and receive victory after Arad attacks and takes prisoners. Soon afterward discouragement on the road becomes open contempt for the food God has provided, and deadly serpents enter the camp. The people confess, Moses intercedes, and life is given through looking at the bronze serpent raised on a pole. The itinerary then breaks into poetry: an obscure citation from the Book of the Wars of the LORD and a brief song at a well preserve more than geography. By the chapter's end Israel is no longer merely moving through wilderness. Sihon and Og come out to fight, are defeated, and their territories are occupied. The congregation has towns behind it before crossing Jordan. That new position explains why Moab will look across the border in the next chapter and become afraid.
