I Press toward the Mark
Philippians · acoustic chamber anthem
[Credentials]
Circumcised, of Israel, tribe Benjamin,
Hebrew of Hebrews with zeal disciplined.
Touching the law he appeared without blame,
Yet gain became loss when confronted by Christ.
[Verse I]
All things are counted as refuse and dust,
To win Christ and stand in His righteousness.
Not mine from the law, but by faith in the Son,
To know Him and power where rising has begun.
[Chorus]
I press toward the mark,
For the prize of the high calling of God.
Forgetting the things that are lying behind,
Reaching to what is before on the road.
I press toward the mark,
Not already perfect, but captured by Christ.
[Verse II]
To share in His sufferings, shaped to His death,
If by any means resurrection is reached.
As many as mature, let this be the mind,
And walk by the pattern that truth has defined.
[Warning]
Many walk weeping as foes of the cross,
Whose god is the belly, whose glory is loss.
They mind earthly things, but our citizenship
Is held in the heavens from which comes the King.
[Final Chorus]
I press toward the mark,
The Savior will come from the heavenly place.
He will transform this low body of weakness
To likeness of glory by sovereign strength.
[Outro]
The past was not denied,
It no longer set the direction.
