Attend to wisdom; listen to discretion, So your lips preserve the knowledge that is right. The strange woman's words may drip like honey, But her ending cuts like a two-edged sword. Her feet descend toward death and ruin; Her steps refuse the pathway leading home. Keep your road far from her doorway, Lest your honor pass to strangers. Drink the water from your own well. Let your fountain carry joy. Rejoice with the wife of your youth, Delighted in the love you share. Why be captured by forbidden pleasure, Held within the arms of one unknown? Every human way is seen by God; Our own iniquity becomes a cord. The wicked dies without instruction, Lost within the greatness of his folly.

About the passage

Proverbs 5: Sweet words, bitter ends, and a faithful fountain

Chapter 5 does not oppose pleasure to wisdom. It opposes a sweet beginning whose end is bitter to faithful delight whose intensity is openly welcomed. The forbidden woman's words are smooth enough to conceal the direction of her path, so the father repeatedly asks the son to judge the invitation by its destination. The imagined cost spreads far beyond a private moment, consuming honor, labor, wealth, bodily strength, and public standing. The chapter then gives marital joy its own abundance of water, beauty, desire, and satisfaction. The wife of youth is not a merely defensive alternative but the proper object of continuing delight. The conclusion returns to paths and hidden observation. What may be concealed from other people remains before the LORD, and the wrongdoer's own sins become the cords that bind the freedom he expected to find.
