When you sit to eat beside a ruler, Watch yourself and measure your desire. Do not crave the food that hides deception; Do not wear your strength away for riches. Do not let your heart envy sinners; Stay in reverence all the day. There is surely hope beyond this moment; Your expectation will not be cut away. Wealth may spread its wings and fly toward heaven. Do not eat the bread of jealous eyes. Do not speak your wisdom to a fool; He will only scorn the truth you offer. Do not withhold correction from a child; Guided discipline can rescue from the grave. Buy the truth, and never sell it cheaply; Wisdom, knowledge, judgment must be saved. Who has sorrow, wounds, and needless quarrels? Those who linger long beside the wine. At the last it bites just like a serpent, Clouds the eyes and overturns the mind. Give your heart to wisdom, not to sinners; Keep your eyes upon the upright way. There is surely hope beyond this moment; Your expectation will not fade.

About the passage

Proverbs 23: The feast does not disclose the host

Proverbs 23 moves through tables, purses, households, hearts, and finally the unstable body of the drunkard. A ruler’s feast may conceal obligation, a selfish host’s welcome may hide calculation, and riches can sprout wings while their owner is still staring at them. The fatherless likewise appear vulnerable until the chapter names their mighty Redeemer, turning a moved landmark into a matter of advocacy and judgment. Parental instruction asks for more than outward compliance: the father seeks the son’s heart, while both father and mother are pictured rejoicing in wisdom. Truth is something to buy and refuse to sell. Appetite becomes the chapter’s recurring test, whether for food, wealth, sex, or wine. The closing drinker has wounds, numbness, and loss of balance behind him, yet his first waking intention is to seek the source again. The trap speaks for itself.
