It is God's glory to conceal a matter; The honor of a king is searching it through. Remove the dross and silver finds its purpose; Remove the wicked, and the throne stands true. A word fitly spoken in its season Is golden fruit in silver set. Faithful correction to a willing listener Is an ornament the heart will not forget. Do not push yourself before a ruler; Better to be called than put to shame. Do not rush to court against your neighbor; A secret carelessly revealed destroys a name. If your enemy is hungry, give him bread; If he thirsts, then place the water near. North wind gathers rain, and hidden slander Brings an angry face and spreading fear. Like a city broken down without defenses Is the person with no rule upon the soul. Too much honey overwhelms the sweetness; Seek no praise beyond a measured goal. A word fitly spoken in its season Carries grace no treasure can replace. Let restraint and kindness guard your speaking; Set the truth like gold in silver space.

About the passage

Proverbs 25: The right word needs the right setting

Proverbs 25 announces itself as a Solomonic collection copied by the men of Hezekiah, then spends the chapter asking what conduct fits its setting. Kings search matters, silver is refined, and honored places are better received by invitation than seized by self-promotion. Words become especially sensitive to placement. A timely sentence can be gold set in silver, a faithful messenger can refresh, a false promise can gather clouds without rain, and singing to a heavy heart can make grief less sheltered rather than more. Even good things have limits: too much honey sickens, and too much visiting exhausts welcome. An enemy is still to receive bread and water, while self-glory and ungoverned spirit expose a different failure of proportion. The final wall-less city makes self-command physical: without it, strength can exist while defense has already collapsed.
