About the passage
Proverbs 29: A ruler who listens to lies changes the room
Proverbs 29 shows how character spreads through households, courts, cities, and systems of speech. Repeated reproof can meet a neck that keeps hardening until consequence arrives suddenly, while rulers can make whole populations rejoice or mourn through the quality of judgment. The poor person’s cause becomes a test of righteous authority because justice is most revealing when the claimant has little leverage. A ruler who listens to lies teaches an entire service what kind of speech gets rewarded. The chapter also corrects familiar misreadings: “vision” concerns prophetic revelation and the law, not organizational ambition. Hasty speech, uncontrolled anger, pride, indulgent formation, and fear of people all place judgment under pressure. The closing sayings finally strip human approval of ultimate authority. Rulers may grant favors and audiences may love or hate, but every person’s judgment comes from the LORD.
