Why do the nations rise in anger? Why do their rulers plan in vain? They gather against the Lord and His Anointed, Dreaming they can break every chain. The King is set upon Zion; No crown of earth can cast Him down. Serve the Lord with fear and trembling; Blessed are all who trust the Son. Heaven is not shaken by their boasting. The Lord will answer pride with wrath. The nations are the Son's inheritance; The ends of earth belong beneath His path. Be wise, you kings; receive correction. Rejoice, but let your joy still tremble. Honor the Son before anger is kindled, Before rebellion breaks like a vessel. The King is set upon Zion; No crown of earth can cast Him down. Serve the Lord with fear and trembling; Blessed are all who trust the Son.

About the passage

Psalms 2: The throne that rebellion cannot unsettle

Psalm 2 begins with political noise and ends with refuge. Nations rage, rulers coordinate, and the LORD’s authority is described by them as cords to be broken, yet heaven answers without panic. The Book of Psalms contrasts rulers who “set themselves” with the Lord who simply sits, then places the king’s authority inside a decree received from God. The nations that first appear as rebels become the horizon of the king’s inheritance, and the imagery of iron against pottery makes resistance look fragile beside that grant. The closing address does not stop at judgment. The same rulers are told to receive instruction, serve with fear, and seek safety in submission, so warning and blessing occupy the same ending.
