May the Lord answer you when the day goes hard; May the name of Jacob's God put you out of reach. May help reach you from the holy place, And strength be sent to you out of Zion. May He keep in mind everything you brought, And take what you laid down as good. May He give you what your heart is set on And carry through everything you planned. We will be glad on the day you are rescued, And raise our flags in the name of our God. May the Lord give you an answer to every asking. Now I am sure of it: the one He chose, He rescues; He speaks to him out of His holy heaven With the saving strength of His right hand. Some people stake everything on war-chariots; Some stake it on horses. What we will hold onto is the name Of the Lord our God. They buckled and went down; We are still standing on our feet. Rescue us, Lord. Hear us on the day we call.

About the passage

Psalms 20: The king's strength is answered prayer

Psalm 20 sounds like a people gathered around their king in a day of danger. The opening petitions ask the LORD to hear, defend, strengthen, remember offerings, and fulfill counsel, placing royal planning within worship rather than outside it. Banners are raised in God’s name, and the community anticipates rejoicing because the king’s rescue concerns more than private success. Confidence then sharpens: the LORD saves his anointed and answers from heaven with the strength of his right hand. Against that stands the visible advantage of chariots and horses. The Book of Psalms does not deny their military usefulness, but it refuses to make them the final support. Falling and standing become the decisive images, and the psalm closes where it began, still dependent on an answer when the people call.
