The fool has said there is no God above him. Corruption stains the deeds that follow pride. No one naturally does the good or seeks Him; Human paths have turned aside. God looks down from heaven for understanding, For anyone who truly seeks His face. All have fallen, all together spoiled; No one stands by goodness of their own. Will those who consume Your people never learn? They eat the poor as casually as bread. Fear will seize them where no danger threatened, For God will scatter those who camp against His own. Oh, that rescue would arise from Zion. When God restores His people, Jacob will rejoice.

About the passage

Psalms 53: The old denial meets a new terror

Psalm 53 repeats much of Psalm 14, but the repetition is not empty duplication. The fool’s inward denial that God matters appears in corrupt conduct, while God looks down from heaven and finds a humanity that has turned aside. The accusation is moral rather than intellectual; the problem is living as though divine judgment can be excluded from the account. The second half sharpens the fate of those who “eat up” God’s people as casually as bread. Their apparent security gives way to terror, scattered bones, and shame before the God they did not call upon. Yet judgment is not the final desire voiced by the psalm. It ends by longing for salvation out of Zion and for Jacob and Israel to rejoice when God reverses the people’s condition. Predatory power is exposed, but restoration supplies the final horizon.
