Give ear to me and do not hide from pleading. My thoughts are restless under hostile noise. My heart is crushed; the terrors of death fall on me, And fear has wrapped my body like a cloak. Oh, that I had wings just like a dove. I would fly far away and find my rest. I would hurry to a shelter in the wilderness, Safe from storm and violent wind. The city is divided by oppression. Fraud and trouble circle every wall. But it was not an enemy who betrayed me; It was my equal, companion, and friend. Cast your burden on the Lord. He will sustain and will not let the righteous fall. Evening, morning, noon, I call before Him; He will hear my voice. Violent men will sink into destruction, But I will trust the Lord.

About the passage

Psalms 55: When the familiar voice carries a sword

Psalm 55 begins with noise and ends with a decision about trust. An enemy’s voice, oppression, fear, trembling, and horror make the speaker wish for wings so he could leave the city entirely. The city itself has become unsafe, with violence on its walls, wickedness in its center, and deceit in its streets. Then the wound receives a familiar face. The deepest betrayal comes from an equal, guide, and acquaintance who once shared counsel and walked with him to the house of God. Smooth words conceal war; speech softer than oil becomes a drawn sword. Against that treachery, the speaker fills evening, morning, and noon with another voice, calling upon God. The promise to cast the burden on the Lord does not erase trembling. It relocates the weight. The psalm closes by placing trust in God precisely where confidence in a companion has failed.
