Psalms 74: The sanctuary is ruined, and the prayer stays open

Psalm 74 refuses to make a ruined sanctuary sound less ruined. Enemy standards occupy the place of worship, axes and hammers destroy carved work, fire brings the dwelling of God's name to the ground, and the community has no prophetic timetable explaining how long the devastation will last. Yet every complaint is built on belonging. The people are still called God's congregation, inheritance, redeemed possession, and vulnerable turtledove. Zion is still the place where he has dwelt. Memory then widens beyond the ruins to sea, rivers, day, night, sun, seasons, and the established borders of the earth. The sanctuary has been devastated, but it is not the edge of God's kingdom. That remembered rule becomes the ground of a covenant appeal. The psalm ends without announcing relief. Enemy tumult is still rising, and faithfulness takes the form of keeping the case open before God.
