About the passage
Psalms 76: The battlefield falls silent before the Judge
Psalm 76 locates God's known name in Judah and his dwelling in Zion, then makes that same place the location where weapons are broken. Bow, shield, sword, and finally "the battle" itself collapse together. The next scene makes military strength look strangely useless: stouthearted warriors sleep, chariots and horses are still, and mighty men cannot "find their hands." Their capacity to act has been removed. Yet the psalm supplies a purpose for this terrifying judgment. God rises to save the meek of the earth. The violence of the strong is stopped for the sake of those most exposed to it. Human wrath therefore cannot govern the final outcome. It is either turned toward God's praise or restrained beneath his control. By the close, princes and kings are included in the horizon of fear, and political titles offer no exemption from the Judge who silences the battlefield.
