About the passage
Psalms 80: The Shepherd’s vine is left without a hedge
Psalm 80 keeps asking for one thing in a refrain that grows heavier each time: “Turn us again” and make God’s face shine. Israel is first a flock under a Shepherd, then a vine brought out of Egypt, planted, rooted, and spread from sea to river. The pain of the poem lies in the fact that the same gardener who established the vine is asked why its hedge has been torn down. Passersby pluck it and wild creatures consume it. Restoration therefore requires more than defeating enemies. It requires the gardener’s own return to the planting he made. The final appeal introduces the man at God’s right hand, asks for renewed life, and reaches the fullest form of the refrain, joining Shepherd, gardener, strength, and shining face in one request for rescue.
