Sing aloud to God our strength; Raise the harp and strike the drum. Sound the trumpet at the new moon; The appointed feast has come. He removed the burden from our shoulders, Freed our hands from baskets and the load. In distress we cried, and He delivered; From the thunder's secret place He spoke. Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it. Listen, Israel, and walk within My way. No strange god should ever stand among you; I am He who brought you out of Egypt. But the people would not hear His counsel, So He let them follow stubborn plans. Had they listened, foes would soon have fallen, And He would have fed them finest wheat.

About the passage

Psalms 81: A festival song becomes an appeal to listen

Psalm 81 begins loud enough to sound purely celebratory: singing, timbrel, harp, psaltery, trumpet, and an appointed feast. Then the God being praised begins to speak, and the festival becomes an examination of whether Israel is listening. The exodus is remembered in bodily terms, with burdens removed from shoulders and hands freed from labor. The same rescuer asks for exclusive allegiance and offers a startling invitation: “open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.” The tragedy is that open mouths are paired with closed ears. Israel will not hear, so God gives the people over to their own desires and counsels. The closing vision names enemies subdued, lasting security, finest wheat, and honey from the rock, leaving the feast to end with food that disobedience has left uneaten.
