About the passage
Psalms 93: The sea raises its voice beneath an older throne
Psalm 93 announces a reign that does not need to be established by defeating a rival claimant. The Lord is already clothed with majesty and strength, the world stands under his rule, and his throne is “established of old” because he is from everlasting. Only then do the floods raise themselves, their voice, and their waves. The repetition lets their noise grow in the ear, but the answer is concise: the Lord on high is mightier than many waters and mighty waves. Volume is not sovereignty. The poem closes by moving from the turbulent sea to God’s testimonies and house. What he speaks is “very sure,” and holiness belongs to his dwelling “for ever.” Cosmic stability and trustworthy revelation therefore belong to the same reign. The God who rules the waters is also the God whose words and holiness give the sanctuary its character.
