About the passage
Psalms 97: The hills melt, but righteousness holds the throne
Psalm 97 announces the Lord’s reign with imagery that can both thrill and terrify: clouds, darkness, fire, lightning, trembling earth, and hills melting like wax. Yet before the display becomes overwhelming, the poem names the throne’s foundation as righteousness and judgment. Power is never allowed to float free from moral character. Idols and those who boast in them are then exposed, while Zion and the daughters of Judah rejoice because the Lord’s judgments reveal his supremacy over all the earth. The final movement turns from cosmic spectacle to the life of those who love God. They are told to hate evil, promised preservation, and given a gentler image than lightning: “Light is sown for the righteous.” Gladness is prepared like a crop that will emerge. The psalm ends with thanksgiving for holiness, returning the entire display to the character of the King.
