Bless the Lord, O soul within me; God is clothed with honor and light. He stretches heaven like a curtain, Builds His chambers over waters in the height. Clouds become His chariot; winds are messengers. Mountains rose and valleys took their place. Springs run through the hills to feed the creatures; Birds sing out among the branches. How manifold are all Your works, O Lord. In wisdom You have made them every one. Earth is full of creatures and provision; Sea is wide with life beneath the sun. You give food in season; they are satisfied. Hide Your face, and every breath grows faint. Send Your Spirit, and creation rises; You renew the surface of the earth. I will sing unto the Lord while I am living. Let my meditation please Him.

About the passage

Psalms 104: A world full of creatures waits for an open hand

Psalm 104 looks at creation long enough for it to become crowded. Water is bounded, then released through valleys. Birds sing, goats find hills, people work, lions hunt, ships cross the sea, and Leviathan plays in it. The Book of Psalms does not make humanity the only creature worth watching. Different lives receive different spaces and hours, while all of them finally gather under one open hand. Food, breath, death, and renewal reveal creation as dependent without making it passive. The poem can admire order without turning the world into a machine. Night has inhabitants, rocks have refugees, and even the sea is full. The singer’s answer is lifelong praise to a Maker who not only sustains his works but is asked to rejoice in them.
