Praise the Lord, for He is good; His mercy lasts forever. Who can speak His mighty acts Or show completely all His praise? We have sinned as did our fathers, Forgetting wonders by the sea. Still He saved them for His name And led them through the depths. They craved in desert, made a calf, Exchanged their glory for an image. Moses stood within the breach; Phinehas rose and stayed the plague. They despised the pleasant land, Joined themselves to idols and to blood. Many times He gave deliverance; Many times rebellion brought them low. Yet He heard their cry and remembered covenant, Repented according to abundant mercy. Save us, gather us from every nation; Let us thank Your holy name. Remember me with the favor of Your people. Blessed be the Lord forever.

About the passage

Psalms 106: The people forget, and the covenant is remembered

Psalm 106 places confession beside the celebration of Psalm 105 and refuses to let Israel admire its past from a safe distance. “We have sinned with our fathers” makes the present congregation part of the account. The Book of Psalms then moves through forgotten mercy, appetite, envy, idolatry, unbelief, child sacrifice, oppression, repeated deliverance, and renewed rebellion. The pattern is exhausting on purpose. Moses can stand in the breach in one scene and speak wrongly in another. The people can sing after the sea and forget almost immediately. Yet “nevertheless” keeps appearing where failure seems to have closed every door. Covenant remembrance interrupts the cycle without calling the people innocent. The chapter ends not with restoration completed, but with a scattered community asking to be gathered.
