Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, But to Your name give glory, For the sake of mercy and of truth. Why should nations ask, "Where is their God?" Our God is in the heavens, Doing all that pleases Him. Their idols are silver and gold, The work of human hands. They have mouths but cannot speak, Eyes but cannot see, Ears but cannot hear, Feet but cannot walk. Those who make them become like them. Israel, trust the Lord. House of Aaron, trust the Lord. All who fear Him, trust the Lord; He is help and shield. The dead do not praise the Lord, But we will bless Him now and forever.

About the passage

Psalms 115: The idols have every feature except a working one

Psalm 115 answers the question “Where is now their God?” without producing an object for inspection. The Book of Psalms contrasts a God who acts freely from heaven with idols whose impressive materials and humanlike features accomplish absolutely nothing. Mouths cannot speak, eyes cannot see, ears cannot hear, hands cannot handle, and feet cannot walk. The satire is followed by a repeated practical answer: trust the LORD because he is help and shield. Israel, Aaron’s house, and all who fear him are included, small and great. The final contrast returns to speech. Lifeless images have throats that cannot make a sound, while living people declare that they will bless the LORD. The issue is not visibility versus invisibility. It is powerless appearance versus effective action.
