About the passage
Psalms 124: The broken snare explains the surviving voice
Psalm 124 asks Israel to imagine the disaster that would have followed if the LORD had not been on its side. The repeated conditional opening makes the community face that alternative before naming the outcome. Enemies become something that could swallow them alive, then waters rising high enough to pass over the soul. The Book of Psalms does not identify one battle because the images are doing broader work: they show a danger too large for survival to be explained by the people’s own strength. The second half changes the imagery but not the conclusion. Israel is prey not given to teeth and a bird escaped from a snare. The decisive fact is that the snare broke. The bird never becomes powerful enough to defeat the trap. The chapter closes by naming help in the LORD, maker of heaven and earth, preserving vulnerability even inside thanksgiving.
