Say it out loud, Israel, and keep saying it: we would not be standing here on our own. When the anger of others came up at us, we would have gone down whole into it. The water would have closed over our heads; the proud current would have carried us off. But we were never handed across to be torn; we were not left between their teeth. The net came apart and the bird went free, and that is what happened to us. The name of the Lord is what held, the One who made the sky and the ground.

About the passage

Psalms 124: The broken snare explains the surviving voice

Psalm 124 asks Israel to imagine the disaster that would have followed if the LORD had not been on its side. The repeated conditional opening makes the community face that alternative before naming the outcome. Enemies become something that could swallow them alive, then waters rising high enough to pass over the soul. The Book of Psalms does not identify one battle because the images are doing broader work: they show a danger too large for survival to be explained by the people’s own strength. The second half changes the imagery but not the conclusion. Israel is prey not given to teeth and a bird escaped from a snare. The decisive fact is that the snare broke. The bird never becomes powerful enough to defeat the trap. The chapter closes by naming help in the LORD, maker of heaven and earth, preserving vulnerability even inside thanksgiving.
