Offer thanks to the Lord; He is good. His faithful love has no ending. He alone works wonders no one can copy, Shaped the sky, the ground, the sun, the moon. He struck Egypt and led Israel out, Opened the sea and walked them through the middle. He carried His people across the wasteland, Broke great kings and handed on their land. His faithful love has no ending, His faithful love has no ending. He thought of us when we were brought low, Pulled us from our enemies, and feeds every living thing. Offer thanks to the God of heaven: His faithful love has no ending.

About the passage

Psalms 136: One answer through creation, deliverance, and daily bread

Psalm 136 gives every verse the same response: “for his mercy endureth for ever.” The repetition could have become mechanical, but the changing first half of each line keeps giving the refrain new work to do. The Book of Psalms applies enduring mercy to creation, sun and moon, Egypt’s defeat, the sea crossing, wilderness guidance, conquered kings, inherited land, remembered distress, rescue, and food for all flesh. That range is crucial. Mercy is not reserved for gentle scenes or spectacular emergencies. The firstborn deaths and Pharaoh’s overthrow remain inside Israel’s praise, while the wilderness receives the same refrain as the divided sea. The community finally enters the account with “our low estate,” linking present memory to older deliverance. Then the final act named before thanksgiving is wonderfully ordinary: feeding living creatures. Cosmic order, national rescue, and daily nourishment all receive one answer. The psalm measures mercy by continuity across radically different kinds of need.
